Criminal AFIS
AST Criminal AFIS is a system designed specifically for large Forensic
Police Units as the essential tool in the field of Dactiloscopic Searching and
Investigative Environments, in a Nationwide Scope and Corporative Service. The
managed information volume is so large, response time on queries must be low and
concurrence of users as high as possible. Besides it owns a wide set of
dactiloscopic investigative tools, to ease the expert. Next figure lies out the
distribution of the elements of the system.

Among its features, the main ones are:
Searching latentprints obtained
on the crime’s scene in order to identify the offender.
Strictly accomplish of the
ANSI/NIST CSL 1-1993 FBI Standard.
Very high speed to response
fingerprint searches: one fingerprint among 1 Million in less than 20 seconds,
with no need of proprietary, dedicated, or expensive RISC
hardware.
Access to the system from mobile
devices using standard transmission media, with secure communications, GPRS,
UMTS, WIFI.
Open platform to ensure the owner
is the actual holder of the information, to manage, to replicate, or to backup
in any support.
As is well
known, automated systems identify minutiae or characteristic points, as the next
figure illustrates:
AST AFIS makes possible to carry
on the following dactiloscopic investigative searches:
Fingerprint-Fingerprint analysis:
looks for an individual among the registered ones.
Fingerprint-Latentprint analysis:
asign a crime to an offender just known.
Latentprint-Fingerprint analysis:
identifes the author of a crime.
Latentprint-Latentprint analysis:
although the author has not been identified, the system allows to assign
offences committed by him. AST AFIS carries on comparison at very high speed, as
the figure illustrates:
Once the evidences have been
collected, AST AFIS ships a complete set of tools to incorporate all the
information in the invesigative process:

When fingerprint or latentprint
has been introduced in the system, the expert can carry on all the work upon it,
with no lack or loose of information from the original,

The result is delivered by the
system as a set of candidates, with the selected number of them. Candidates are
ordered by founded similitude or trust, that is, the probability to be the
original. As a tool for the expert, is his decision after a visual comparison to
confirm the identification, as the next figure shows,
As
it can be seen, the dactiloscopic investigative work can be carried on a
Workstation or through mobile devices by a radio link, GPRS or
UMTS.
Finally in
the next figure are plotted the response times on queries for AST AFIS and for
others vendors. As can be seen from a certain number of tenprintcards, that is,
fingerprints, AST response time does not grow, while in others that time is
proportional to the database’s size.
